The members of KaadKaapi are dedicated to ensuring the long term sustainability of coffee and a commitment to supporting wildlife conservation in the area. They provide farmers with access to finance, advisement to produce high quality coffees, and handle exportation of these specialty coffees to international markets. Their coffee estates are cultivated in the hills of the Western Ghats of India, which is recognized as one of the world's eight biodiversity hotspots. It is extraordinarily rich in unique species and contains more than 30 percent of all plant, fish, reptile, amphibian, bird and mammal species found in India. The southern Western Ghats has the largest contiguous tiger and single largest Asiatic Elephant populations in the world.
Hospura Estate is a small 12 hectare farm owned by Zuheb Abrar, a 3rd generation coffee farmer who manages the estate along with his father, wife and son. Coffee on the farm is grown in traditional polyculture shade with high density and diversity of native and endemic shade tree species that support a wide variety of Birds, Butterflies and Mammals. Among other birds, the plantation is home to endemic birds like the Nilgiri Flowerpecker, Blyth's Starling, Malabar Parakeet, and also home to vulnerable mammals like the Spotted Deer and Flying Squirrel. India has a rich coffee history. In 1670, Baba Budan smuggled seven coffee seeds from Yemen to Karnataka, making India the third country to cultivate arabica coffee. Hospura Estate is located at the very foothills of this historic site.
We booked this coffee along with the Ginimao Estate lot last year as we were incredibly impressed with how balanced and complete each of these two coffees were. This lot from Hospura Estate has a distinct vanilla sweetness, a nice orange citrus acidity with a creamy mouthfeel and nutty finish. There hasn't been a brew method I haven't enjoyed yet; it's great on pour over and we have been getting some incredible results as Espresso. We hope you enjoy this one and we look forward to bringing in more amazing coffees through KaadKaapi in the future.
